Motivation is a force that encourages one’s action or feeling. It is like rubbing of two stones to ignite a fire. One can be motivated by self and others can inspire us too which further help us to motivate ourselves.

Why is Motivation essential in our life?

Motivation is essential to get into action. It is an urge to attain a goal to move ahead in life. It is a desire to be successful. It acts as a driving force which drives us to do what we are doing.

Types of Motivation:

  1. External Motivation

As the name suggests, external is through the outside source. It can be money, fame, fear or society. Some people perform or work under the threat of losing name, fame or money. This can be due to fear motivation which can get work initially but will drain out after some point of time.

The external motivation can be moulded in the form of incentives like bonuses, recognition…

  1. Internal Motivation

Internal Motivation is through your inner drive. This comes from pride, responsibility, structuring goals, achievement and self-esteem. The two most important factors of internal motivation are Responsibility and Recognition. Recognition originates from outside whereas responsibility from within.

Demotivating Factors for Motivation

  • Criticism is a factor that is responsible for one’s self-concept. If the person is criticized over a good act, then certainly that kind of behaviour or act will lower down.
  • Be careful with the words used for others. Sometimes public humiliation can leave an impact on the person which could deteriorate one’s performance in the long run.
  • One can be most motivated by SELF. If the person is into a practice of negative self-talk, this is a major factor for self demotivation.
  • Because of Failure or fear of failure most people do not initiate anything new in life. So, in spite of their abilities, they do not take the risk and ultimately do not get success.
  • As we don’t have clarity of our future, we move here and there in life to achieve goals. So, lack of direction consumes more time, effort and energy which may sometimes lead towards failure.
  • Low self-esteem restricts our boundaries and doesn’t allow us to grow as required. We don’t perform up to our optimal level. So, with a bit of disappointment, we tend to give up.
